We believe that access to the NAWS community should never depend on someone's ability or desire to pay. That's why free membership will always be an important part of the Society.
Â
For those who want to help NAWS do more, our supporting memberships provide a way to contribute directly to the Society's work. Supporting members receive additional benefits and gifts as our way of recognizing their contribution, but every membership begins with the same thing: belonging to the Society. No matter what level you choose, all website content will be unlocked.

The yeoman is closely associated with the great age of the English longbow. In the armies spanning centuries, English and Welsh archers were drawn heavily from the common population rather than the knightly elite, serving on foot or mounted for mobility. Over time, the image of the skilled yeoman archer became inseparable from battles such as Crécy and Agincourt and from the broader story of the English warbow.
Â
We chose Yeoman for our free membership because these members form the foundation of NAWS. You don't need to make a financial contribution to belong here. If you share an interest in historical warbows, their history, craft, or practice, you're part of the community.

The medieval English forest was more than simply woodland. Royal forests were territories governed under their own system of forest law, established to protect the king's hunting rights, game, and the landscape that sustained them. Foresters were among the officials charged with keeping these forests and enforcing their laws. At its height in the thirteenth century, roughly a quarter of England was subject to royal forest jurisdiction.
Â
We chose Forrester for our first supporting membership as a nod to those entrusted with the keeping of these landscapes. Just as the medieval forest depended upon people charged with its care, our Forresters provide the first level of financial support that helps NAWS preserve historical knowledge, support its community, and carry the traditions of the warbow forward.

Medieval English armies often organized their foot soldiers and archers into groups of twenty, each led by a vintenar. Larger bodies could then be formed from these smaller units, with five groups of twenty forming a hundred under a centenar. The vintenar stood close to the men he led, a working leader entrusted with greater responsibility within the ranks.
Â
We chose Vintenar for our second supporting tier because it represents that same step from participation to greater responsibility. Vintenars provide a higher level of support to NAWS, helping us organize events, develop educational resources, preserve traditional skills, and build a stronger community around historical warbow archery.

The Cheshire archers were renowned medieval longbowmen whose reputation carried them onto battlefields in both England and France. Cheshire supplied significant numbers of archers for English armies, including men who fought at Crécy and Agincourt, two of the defining victories of the longbow era. Richard II also drew upon Cheshire for the yeoman archers of his own royal retinue and bodyguard.

We chose Cheshire for our third supporting tier to honor not an individual rank, but an entire community remembered for its association with the longbow. Their story represents something central to NAWS: that traditions survive when communities practice them, value them, and pass them forward.

The White Hart was the personal badge of King Richard II, one of the most recognizable royal emblems of late medieval England. A white stag wearing a golden crown or collar and chain, the badge appeared throughout Richard's reign. The name also carries a special connection to the tier that precedes it. Richard relied heavily upon his famous Cheshire archers, and contemporary evidence associates his Cheshire retinue with the royal insignia of the White Hart. Historic England specifically describes the badge as being worn by Richard's supporters and his bodyguard of Cheshire archers.

We chose White Hart for NAWS's highest membership tier to represent an exceptional commitment to the Society and its future. White Hart members provide foundational support for our educational work, events, historical research, preservation of traditional skills, and our efforts to build a lasting international community around historical warbow archery.
